aircast guidelines>>>weather back to aircast local conditions

real time weather>>>
Standard weather measurements taken from the Charleston Coast Guard Station (Charleston Peninnsula).

AWS Convergence Technologies, Inc. owns and operates the largest network of weather stations in the world. This real-time network gathers comprehensive, up-to-the-second weather information making these wether readings the most current..

Though located at the Charleston Peninnsula tip, the Charleston Coast Guard station wind readings are an excellent indicator of what might be happening on the beaches. Sometimes, they read a bit lower than surf zone winds.

12-hour forecast>>>
Short term modeled weather patterns for the next 12-hours. Based on Charleston Coast Guard.

radar & satellite images>>>
A pop up of very useful doppler & satellite images including tropical storm tracking and hazardous weather statements.

doppler>>>
NEXRAD (Next Generation Radar) obtains weather information (precipitation and wind) based upon returned energy. The radar emits a burst of energy (green). If the energy strikes an object (rain drop, bug, bird, etc), the energy is scattered in all directions (blue). A small fraction of that scattered energy is directed back toward the radar.

This reflected signal is then received by the radar during its listening period. Computers analyze the strength of the returned pulse, time it took to travel to the object and back, and phase shift of the pulse. This process of emitting a signal, listening for any returned signal, then emitting the next signal, takes place very fast, up to around 1300 times each second.
For more info on how radars work click here.

short range - static & loop
Visually shows base reflectivity up to 143 miles. Because this is an unflitered radar image, some noise and static tends to appear around the Beaufort / Savanah region. We often ignore this.

long range - static & loop
Visually shows base reflectivity up to 286 miles. Because this is an unflitered radar image, some noise and static tends to appear around the Beaufort / Savanah region. We often ignore this.

satellite>>>
infrared
In this regional infrared (IR) image, cold clouds are high clouds, so the colors typically highlight the colder regions. In a water vapor image, white areas indicate moisture and dark areas indicate little or no moisture, so the colors typically highlight areas with large amounts of moisture.

infrared loop
Shows a looping infrared satellite image taken over past several hours. Useful for tracking storm movement within our region.

water vapor loop
Pure satellite imagery taken over past several hours to show cloud movement in upper western hemisphere. Great for traking large tropical storm systems.

tropical storm & hurricanes>>>
3-5 day forecast track
Illustrates current position and forecasted track for tropical depressions and hurricanes that may possibly affect local Charleston weather.

local hazardous weather outlook
List counties and any hazardous weather watches and warnings. Very important during hurricane season. Will advise of high surf, rip currents, tornadoes, flooding, etc.
