The Demands of High Wind Kiteboarding

There’s nothing more exciting, nor chilling, than kiting in high winds. Help keep these sessions safe and delectable by focusing on these three critical areas: gear, weather, and technique. While the first two are easier to manage, the third will take some practice.

Got Wind?

S2 * .00256 = AP

This basic formula calculates available
wind pressure per square foot.

S =
Wind Speed ~ AP = Available Power

gear must be right type & in great shape
when kiteboarding in strong winds it is easy to get over powered. The proper kite and gear is required.Did you know a 30kt wind’s power is 4X stronger than 15kts? Every time the wind speed doubles, it's force exponentially increases by 400%.

Mixing both the right kite size and style are key high wind ingredients. Small, stable gust absorbing kites are key. Bridled designs offer more stability, depower and safety.

Second, your board needs good bite. Narrower shapes with flex and larger fins allow more control in powered conditions.

Finally, a harness which lowers your gravity center helps manage power. Also, be sure your gear is in immaculate condition. A small un-repaired pin hole can easily break open under high pressure.

studing weather patterns is critical
study weather forecasts and predict wind speed, strength and directionHigh winds are often products of unstable weather systems. They shift more in speed and direction than lighter breezes.

Knowing what’s going TO happen is just as important as what IS happening. Study the weather and local area. Avoiding shallow water, obstacles and crazy wind patterns reduces risk should something go wrong.

reaction times are super fast
When kite surfing in strong wind speeds, proper high wind kiteboarding skills are required.Strong winds require dedicated focus to EVERY element, especially kite control. Since you’ll be riding smaller kites, everything is faster. Your brain and reaction time must keep up.

Slow & easy movements are vital. Know overpowered riding techniques. Keeping your kite low and board on edge decreases control loss by maximizing resistance. If you’re flying high, your kite’s probably too big and only your body weight is working for you.
